Urgent help and support for mental health

Benefits of Buddying

As a participating student you can:

  • feel less vulnerable and uncertain
  • obtain greater social and academic confidence
  • become aware of other student services and support
  • be more pro-active in your development and learning

What participating students thought about being buddied:

  • I feel secure in knowing I have somebody I can turn to and ask for assistance or even just a chat
  • It really helped me settle in into my first few months of university
  • Made me feel at ease as I am far way from home
  • I really appreciate the buddy scheme, it has helped me a lot where I would have sat and struggled. Having a buddy has helped me not only mentally but also with motivation as sometimes a good chat is all you really need

As a Buddy you can develop skills in:

  • Active Listening
  • Communication
  • Empathy
  • Interpersonal / Confidence
  • Organisation

What Buddies have gained from their experience:

  • I think it is a great initiative to guide students in a friendly way
  • It's really nice for new students to communicate with someone and to make friends
  • I think I have gained skills of effective communication with peers
  • I feel I've learned to be more patient with people
