Basic Discovery searching

Hints and tips 

  • Do not use complete sentences in the search box. Only use the important keywords, for example, ‘oil recovery’, ‘community nursing’, ‘forensic accounting’, 'Victorian exploration Africa’ etc…
  • Using more keywords produces a more specific set of results

Discovery search results – what is displayed?

Search results will initially be unfiltered. Discovery states which format the item is - Journal Article, Book, eBook, Book Review, Newspaper Article, Report, and more.

  • Quick Look – provides bibliographic information, an abstract and journal details.
  • Book - the stock status and library shelf mark of the item at our Middlesbrough Campus Library is displayed.
  • Electronic resources - eBook, Journal Article, Book Review, Newspaper Article, Book Chapter etc… Discovery displays Full Text Online if the Library subscribes to this publication or database. To view the full text of an item online, you must be a current member of the University and have a Teesside University IT account. Enter these details when prompted.
