You should always be cautious in your writing. As there are different viewpoints on subject areas, you should be wary of sounding too definite. There may not be a correct answer, just a slightly more likely answer. It is rare for researchers in the academic world to all agree on something, so by staying cautious, you can show that there isn’t necessarily complete agreement.
You can use words such as tends, suggests, could, may or possibly.
For example, you wouldn’t write, ‘This definitely proves that X is the case’.
Instead, you could write, ‘This suggests that X is the case’.
