What is a specific learning difficulty?

A Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) affects the way that information is processed and learned. This can have an impact on literacy skills including understanding how language is used in both verbal and written form. This does not have an impact on overall intelligence.

Examples of a SpLD are Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, ADHD, and a specific language impairment.

 

Dyslexia in more detail

Dyslexia arises from a weakness in the processing of language-based information. It tends to run in families but environmental factors may also contribute. Dyslexia can occur at any level of intellectual ability. It is not the result of poor motivation, emotional disturbance, sensory impairments or lack of opportunities, but it may occur alongside any of these. How do I know if I have a specific learning difficulty?

Dyslexia affects people in a number of ways. Some examples could be difficulties with:

  • Reading, writing and spelling
  • Words jumping around when reading
  • Short term memory
  • Mathematics and sequencing
  • Concentration
  • Organisation and time management

The only way to confirm Dyslexia is to have a full diagnostic assessment carried out by a qualified Educational Psychologist or Specialist Teacher. We contract Psychologists from The Educational Guidance Service (EGS) to come in and carry out these assessments.

Dyslexia presents itself in a variety of ways and there are a range of resources and strategies available to help depending on how you are affected such as specialist software, specialist tuition, equipment etc. which we will go into more detail later.
