It may take some time for you to adjust to studying in the UK. You are expected to construct your own knowledge and do your own research, rather than being taught everything.

Lectures, seminars and practicals

Depending on the subject, you will be expected to attend lectures, seminars and practicals - you will need to prepare for these, so make sure you know how to make the most of them.

Reading

On most courses you will be given an online reading list (Reading Lists Online (RLO)).

You will not usually be expected to buy or even read every book and journal article on the list.

Items on a book list may contain:

  • essential reading or reference material
  • an overview of the subject
  • background information
  • useful information for a specific topic or piece of work

You may need to learn how to read effectively and efficiently to make the best use of your time and resources available.

There are a number of skills that you may be expected to use in future jobs that are usually part of assessment at Teesside.
