Structuring an assignment (Open Learning)

Main body: paragraphs

The main body of the assignment is divided up into separate paragraphs, which are each connected to the main question of the essay or to one of the assessment criteria.

Each paragraph should be on a single topic, making a single point.  A paragraph is usually around a third of a page.  This doesn’t have to be exact – there could be two, three or four paragraphs in a page.  However, if there’s only one paragraph on the page it’s unlikely to be covering a single point. If there are six or seven, you won’t be looking into your topic in a sufficiently in-depth way.
