Information for visitors

Welcome

Visitors are welcome to the Library at either Middlesbrough or Darlington campus durincampus heartg staffed opening hours. Visitors can access Library stock for reference purposes and are able to use the Library photocopying and scanning facilities, following the copyright regulations displayed next to each machine.

 

Can I join the Library as a member of the public?

You can pay to join the Library as an external member. Please note that all membership requests and renewals are subject to approval. University and Library regulations to apply to all users.

PCs and electronic resources

Access to PCs and our electronic information sources, such as online databases and electronic journals are not accessible to visitors or external members due to licensing restrictions.

External membership

There are 2 main categories of external membership, Blue or Gold. You can apply for new memberships and for membership renewals online using the link to the online form below or ask at the iZone. Responses to requests will be given within 7 days.

Blue membership

This enables you to borrow up to 6 standard loan items at any one time (white date label), which can be loaned for up to 4 weeks and is offered to individuals at £20 per annum. See also information on membership concessions below.

Gold membership

This enables you to borrow a maximum of 18 items at any one time out of the following - standard loans (12 maximum loaned for up to 4 weeks with a white date label), weekly loans (6 maximun, loaned for 1 week, with a yellow date label) and high demand items (3 maximun, loaned for 3 days, green date label).

The gold membership is offered to individuals at £50 per annum and to institutions at £100 per annum.  In the case of the latter, any member of an institution or company may use the corporate membership card to borrow items, although we do require the principal contact from the institution to complete the registration request and to be ultimately responsible for the return of all items borrowed. 

Please note: Membership does not include access to IT facilities due to licensing restrictions.  Membership charges are reviewed annually and may change.

 

Getting your TUSC

Once your request has been approved, you will need to provide proof of identification which includes your address e.g. a household bill, driving license etc. The library will provide you with a Teesside University smart card (TUSC), this is required to borrow material from the library. The iZone staff will capture your image for your TUSC and provide you with your PIN. You need to be 18 or over to become a member of Teesside University Library.

How do I pay for membership?

  • At the Library iZone during full-service hours with cash, credit/debit cards or cheques (cheques payable to Teesside University)
  • By telephone with credit or debit card to 01642 342100 (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00)

NB.  Institutional members can request to be invoiced for the membership cost.  Please ask at the Library iZone for further information.

 

Membership concessions

There are a number of concessions in place with other organisations which may entitle you to a free blue membership, as follows:

External users may apply to the Director of the Library for a remission of the borrowing subscription in cases of hardship by writing to: Library & Information Services, Teesside University, Middlesbrough Tees Valley TS1 3BX, or email libraryhelp@tees.ac.uk

 

Renewing your membership

Membership can be renewed up to 30 days prior to expiry and is subject to approval.  To renew your membership complete the online form below, you will be required to arrange payment or provide proof of eligibility for a concession.

All existing loans will also need to be returned and re-issued to you as part of the renewal process.

Need a PIN?

You will be given a PIN when you collect your card or you can ask for it at the library iZone or contact the library to request that it is posted out to you.

Borrowing books

Your membership allows you to borrow up to 6 standard loan items.  These items have white date labels.  Please note fines for late return of borrowed items will apply.

Renewal of Library items

You can renew your loans:

  • Online - 24/7 by accessing My Account via the The Catalogue. See the following information on how to do this,  you will need your User name (e.g. X1234567) and your 4 digit PIN
  • Telephone - Monday - Friday 09:00 - 17:00, 01642 342100

You can also renew your loans by visiting the Library during opening hours at the catalogue points located throughout the Library or at the iZone (during full service opening hours)

Can I photocopy in the Library?

Yes, you can use your TUSC to access photocopying and scanning services. Please ask at the iZone if you need assistance
