Can I join the Library as a member of the public?

You can pay to join the Teesside University Library as an Community member if you are aged 18 or older. Membership allows you to use the library during staffed hours. Please note that all membership requests and renewals are subject to approval. University and Library regulations (link below) apply to all users.

To apply for a new membership or to renew your existing membership, please see the details below on external membership.

Please note: 

  • PCs and our electronic information resources, such as online databases and electronic journals are not accessible to external members due to licensing restrictions

  • Access control gates are fitted at the entrance to Middlesbrough Campus Library, members need a TUSC to enter and exit the library. Please remember to swipe in and swipe out with your TUSC each time, otherwise you may have problems entering the Library on subsequent visits
  • During self service hours access to the Library is via TUSC for Teesside University Students & Staff only

Community membership

Community membership costs £40 per year and enables you to borrow a maximum of 12 standard loan items at any one time, loaned for up to 4 weeks with a white date label. See also information on membership concessions below.

Please note: Membership does not include access to IT facilities due to licensing restrictions.  Membership charges are reviewed annually and may change.

 

How do I apply for a paid membership?

Membership concessions

There are a number of concessions in place which may entitle you to a free membership, as follows:

Community users may apply to the Director of Student & Library Services for a remission of the borrowing subscription in cases of hardship by writing to: Student & Library Services, Teesside University, Middlesbrough Tees Valley TS1 3BX, or email libraryhelp@tees.ac.uk

 

Collect your TUSC

You will receive an email when your request has been approved, you will need to provide proof of identification which includes your name, address and date of birth. The library will provide you with a Teesside University Smart Card (TUSC), this is required to borrow material from the library and allow you access the library building. The Library Welcome Desk staff will capture your image for your TUSC.

Please note: If a 4 week loan is reserved by another user, the loan period will automatically change to a 1 week loan and renewals will not be possible, this is to ensure the fair circulation of resources.

Issue your items using the self service units located on the Ground floor of the Library in front corner of the building, Student Union side. To borrow items you will need your TUSC, follow the on screen instructions.  Please ask a member of staff if you would like any help.

 

Renewal of Library items

Items are automatically renewed on your account. The maximum renewal date, calculated as 196 days from the date the item was first issued, will be displayed on your account.

If the resource has been reserved by another library user, renewals will not be possible and the loan period will be reduced to a 1 week loan. You will receive an email notification to alert you, your  account will be blocked if the item is not returned.

An item will not be renewed if:

  • Your account is blocked due to an overdue loan
  • The item is an Inter Library Loan - see the Inter Library Loans
  • The item has been reserved by another borrower

When the maximum renewal date is reached, the book must be returned. if you do want to keep the book for longer, you must return the item and borrow it again.
