Frameworks for appraising

The CASP frameworks give you questions to ask yourself when critically appraising different types of research.

Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklists
This set of critical appraisal tools are designed to be used when reading research. These include tools for Systematic Reviews, Randomised Controlled Trials, Cohort Studies, Case Control Studies, Economic Evaluations, Diagnostic Studies, Qualitative studies and Clinical Prediction Rule. The checklists can be printed or filled in electronically.

Racial Bias

It is important to think about samples in critical appraisal and often research is done with a bias of ethnicities which can affect the research validity. This site gives you information to think about when appraising research.

Critically appraising for antiracism
Racial bias in research impacts a study’s relevancy, validity and reliability, though presently this aspect is not addressed in critical appraisal tools, and consequently appraisers may often not take racial bias into account when assessing a paper’s quality. In response to this, a supplementary tool has been developed, to support appraisers in explicitly addressing racial bias. The tool is on this page
