Borrowing items

How to borrow

Browsing the shelves is currently unavailable, please use the Reserve and Collect service to request items you would like to borrow.

Once you have collected your items, please issue using the self service machines  located on the ground floor of the Library. To borrow items you will need your TUSC and PIN and follow the on screen instructions, keep your receipt to show renewal/return dates.  Please ask a member of staff if you would like any help.

What is my PIN?

You need a PIN to borrow items from the library, to renew and reserve items online via My Account. You can set up your own PIN or re-set an existing PIN by logging on at: MyLogin.

Select the option to Manage Password & Security Details and follow the onscreen instructions.

Postal loans for isolating students

The Library offers a postal loan and returns option for students who are self-isolating due to Coronavirus. Items posted are library stock items that are available for loan. Please see the following points about the service.

  • No charge for loans sent by the Library
  • Postal loans eligibility limited to the period of self-isolation
  • Customers can renew items online or return items when the self-isolation period is over. You can post your items back to the Library, however you are liable for return postal costs
  • Students must be registered as isolating by contacting studentwellbeing@tees.ac.uk
  • Once confirmation from Student Wellbeing has been received, please forward the confirmation email from Student Wellbeing as evidence of eligibility, to the Library via libraryhelp@tees.ac.uk
  • Books only are available
  • Items sent to UK addresses only
  • There is a limit of 5 requests per day for eligible customers, please bear with us whilst we satisfy your requests

FAQs on borrowing

How long can I keep the items I borrow?

  • Standard loans (white label) borrow these for 4 weeks
  • Weekly loans (yellow label ) borrow these for 1 week
  • High Demand (green label) borrow these for 3 days

Items can be renewed up to 24 times as long as they haven't been reserved by another customer. Very overdue Items will result in a library account stop and a replacement item invoice sent to the borrower.

 

Why can't I borrow?

If fines or charges remain outstanding for 2 days or more or loaned items are more than 2 days overdue,  a stop will be placed on your account preventing new loans, reservations and ILL requests. You can still renew your current loans as long as they have not been reserved by another customer.

You will be prevented from borrowing if your library account has expired. Please see a member of Library staff for further help.

 

What items can't I borrow?

Items which cannot be taken out of the Library are clearly labeled as Reference only, print journals are also for reference use and cannot be borrowed.

 

What if the item I need is not in stock?

The Library may be able to obtain the book you require via the Inter Library Loans Service. This service is available to some categories of students and to university staff. For more information see Inter Library Loans

 

Can someone borrow a book on my behalf?

If you would like someone else to collect items on your behalf, you need to provide them with a signed letter of authorisation stating what permission has been granted, you can use the letter of authority available from the link below. In all cases the third party must present your TUSC with every transaction.

Lost TUSC?

To cancel your TUSC (Teesside University Smart Card) and order a replacement (£5 charge), visit MyTUSC Services, you will need your User name and password. Replacement TUSCs will be posted to the address held on your University account providing there is a photo on your account.
