What is Open Research and Open Access

Open Research aims to make the whole research process open, not just making research outputs freely accessible (Open Access). Open Research is concerned with making data, code/software, metadata, research processes, management and publication process open, transparent and accessible to all.

There are many reasons why you should make your research open these include:

  • Your work can be accessed easily and freely as it is not behind a paywall.
  • Open Access articles are more likely to be reused and reproduced.
  • Publicly funded work should be publicly available.
  • Benefits to authors including more citations, wider recognition and future networking to name but a few.
  • Avoids duplication of effort, time and funding.
  • It is University policy for researchers to make their research OA by depositing it into the University’s Institutional Repository - TeesRep.

This useful video from PHD comics explains what open access is and why we need research to be open.
